I'm sure you guys are familiar with this scenario. One minute you're happily attacking your TBR pile and you're feeling mildly successful and the next minute you're getting a text, seeing someone else's review and a tweet or two about this Drop Everything, Must Read Book. If you're like me, you ignore those. But something kept drawing me into Easy's synopsis.

Okay so here's the deal, I loved college. I loved the struggle of finding my adult self while trying to negotiate the hell hallowed halls of Academia Land. Tammara brings this struggle to life while tackling a tough subject -- date rape. And that is a subject I normally stay away from reading because it simply hurts my heart. However, it's an important subject and one that has staggering statistics attached to it. According to crisisconnection.com, there is a rape on an American college campus every 21 hours.

You should all know me by now, there has to be character growth in order for me to lovelovelove a story. Jacqueline is such a wonderful character -- to go through her pain, her acceptance of what happened to her and keep her determination to right a terrible wrong -- made me want to jump up and hug her. Yes, I know she's fictional and yet, that's exactly what I wanted to do.

Tammara also gives Jacqueline a great supporting cast of secondary characters. I won't go on about them (because of spoilers), but their growth provided Jacqueline (and yes, me) with a comfort level that things will change but perhaps they change for the better.

And oh yeah, you're waiting for it...so umm, Lucas. He zoomed onto my Favorite Fictional Boys List with that motorcycle and tattoos of his. What did I like about him? Can't tell you. Spoilers. I'll add that he's very complex. ComplexBadBoys? They should stand on the shelf next to my HotBoyswithSwords.

This is labeled on goodreads as a "Mature Young Adult/New Adult" book. The story is realistic, hopeful and yes, sensual/romantic (which sounds wrong given the subject matter, but please read the book to see why I labeled it just that). I give Tammara and "A+" for making my summer doldrums go away.

Easy Contours of the Heart Tammara Webber 9780425266748 Books Reviews

I seriously enjoyed this. Like, a lot. I'm not a young adult but I *do* enjoy young adult stories when they are well written. Easy had everything I love in a story - angst, a hot and mysterious bad boy love interest with a brain *swoons*, fleshed out characters, and lots of great dialogue.

I could not put this one down, and got WAY too little sleep last night as a result. After recently reading a chain of books a bit below my expectations, this was an awesome surprise. I loved the female lead character, she is someone I would actually want to be friends with. Of course I fell in love with Lucas as well, obviously ;)

There are some sensitive/serious subjects touched upon here and I thought they were handled really well. I get really leery when the subjects of rape and abuse come up in novels - I cannot stand when authors casually just throw that stuff in their novels to give their characters a more tragic backstory, without handling those subjects with the respect they deserve. Those subjects were very tastefully/respectfully handled which I appreciated.

Oh, and don't ask me why, but I am a complete sucker for email/text flirting in books! Also, the make out sessions in here were hotter to me than some of the more explicit "sex scenes" I've read recently in a few other books.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Very well done and I'm so glad I decided to download it. Now I need to go check out what else this author has written.

***And just edited to say...I have like 20 books burning holes in my kindle waiting to be read...but I just HAVE to re-read this first! And that's what I'm doing right now ;)***
This story was hard to rate. There are certain decisions that I didn’t care for as it pertains to the love story and romance and there were others that were perfect and sweet, female empowering, and really awesome. So weighing all things together I went with a 3 star. Here are the things that worked for me

(1) Lucas for the most part he was sweet, protective, amazing, supportive (see below for some negatives),
(2) Jacqueline she was tough but sensitive. Her experiences were not uncommon and while I didn’t agree with all her choices especially at the beginning of the book, she stood up and represented!
(3) Katie super minor side character and sorority president or something but DAMN did she perfectly embody what it is to support your “sisters” in a time of crisis! She was a totally minor character but LOVED HER! In general the ladies’ support of each other in this book was super encouraging.
(4) The feels! This book was a roller coaster of emotions. (SPOILER) I loved the split identity thing allowing J to get to know different sides of Lucas and love both. You think your coming for Jacqueline’s story and issues only to realize that Lucas needs some lovin’ healing too!

Things that didn’t work

(1) SOOOOO Many of Jacqueline’s decisions. I’m a pretty big introvert so maybe it’s just my own hang ups but had I just been heartbroken and nearly raped, I wouldn’t probably be jumping back into partying and drinking right away. No judgment here but it didn’t seem like a very realistic reaction to recent events (maybe she was repressing or something, I just don’t know).

(2) The continuing thoughts and comparisons of her experiences with her ex, especially early on, and choosing to have thanksgiving with him though she was already with Lucas... just no. The ex was way too present in this story for my preferences. When I read a love story I want it to be about the MCs not other hang ups.

(3) Lucas’ hot and coldness. Frankly I felt that Jacqueline had been through enough that she didn’t need that wishy-washiness from Lucas, some of this was due to his need to protect her but later it becomes about protecting himself. His reasons become a lot more understandable later in the book but caused me a lot of irritation early on and then again later in the book when he continued to try pushing her away.

Overall it was a good book I’d recommend reading but there were some personal irritations and decisions made by the characters that is didn’t agree with that dragged down my rating.
